Halite and Trona Cluster

Cubic pink halite and peachy trona cluster, hand dug out of dry lake beds of the southern tips of the Eastern Sierras of California. The halite is very well formed on this piece with intricate cubic layers. Halite also borders the right edge of this cluster and flows onto the back as well. The larger the halite cubes, the more valuable the piece!

Their color comes from halophilic achaea (micro-organisms) that produce pigments to protect themselves from extreme summer temperatures. Halite and trona form annually after winter floodwaters begin to receded and evaporate slowly, producing salt crystals. Trona is also found in Wyoming, Utah, Botswana and Egypt.
